LDS Tours in San Diego, California | LDS Tours in Cancun
San Diego is a major tourist destination for national and international visitors who want to enjoy the beaches, the weather and all the attractions of this wonderful city in the state of California that became part of the United States following the war with Mexico in 1948. Surprisingly, the history of our church is also linked to this event. Alma’s LDS Tours invites you to discover it.
In 1846, the U.S. Army asked the Mormon pioneers to participate in the war against Mexico. Eventhough having suffered several setbacks due to religious persecution that had at that time, the Mormons decided to participate and support the U.S. government in exchange for a monetary reward that would allow them to support their families. Thus was formed for The Mormon Battalion marched 3200 miles to San Diego.
The battalion suffered from difficult experiences along the way. However, no bullet was fired, when the listed Mormons arrived in California the war had ended. So they just settled to help build the city and some highways.
At the end of their service, the Mormon pioneers returned to their families to Salt Lake City, Utah. Those who had no relatives in Utah stayed working in the exploration for gold. In general, veterans of the Mormon battalion played significant roles in the extension of the American west territory in California, Utah, Arizona and other parts of the West.
In memory of this great historical episode remains The Mormon Battalion Monument located on John Street 2510 in San Diego, California, in the Historic District of Old Town. It is open from 9 am to 9 pm, seven days a week and is totally free; Alma’s LDS Tours recommended you to visit it.
