Cardston is a wonderful town located in the Southwestern región of Alberta, Canada. Cardston is situated in the low foothills of southwest Alberta, approximately 25 km north from the American state of Montana. On its north side, it borders the Kainai Nation Indian Reservation, one of the largest reserves in North America. 40 km to the west of Cardston are the Rocky Mountains of Waterton Lakes National Park. Cardston is 77 km southwest of Lethbridge and 234 km south of Calgary. The name of town
Cardston was established by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the year of 1887 which traveled from Utah via the Macleod-Benton Trail to Alberta which is considered part of Mormon Trail.
This branch of the Mormon Trail was forged in 1887 by one of the last covered wagon immigrations by a group of 41 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Utah. Soon after, another group was sent north to construct Canada’s first large irrigation works, the backbone of southern Alberta’s agriculture. Just a few years later, another group arrived, bringing industry to the area. In just over 20 years of the first Mormon settlers arriving, they had colonized 18 communities and 10,000 members of the church lived in the region. Today, four of these com-
munities, Cardston, Magrath, Raymond and Stirling, create Canada’s Mormon Trail and offer travellers great opportunities –no covered wagon required.
Today, the residents of Cardston are blessed to have a beautiful temple known as the Cardston, Alberta temple which was announced in June, 27 of 1913. The site was dedicated exactly one month after by Joseph F. Smith. Finally after lots of work, the temple was ready and dedicated on August, 29 of 1923 by Heber J. Grant. Many years after it was remodeled and finally rededicated by Gordon B. Hinckley.
The temple is known to be the town’s landmark for all it’s residents.
