Cozumel
Cozumel is a magical island located in the southeastern región of the state of Quintana, Roo which belongs to Mexico. It is found 50 kilometers east from the vacational Paradise of Cancun and also only 18 kilometers of the beautiful city of Playa del Carmen.
The name Cozumel is a modern inerpretation of the ancient mayan name used among the inhabitants of this territory which was “kosom-lumil” , meaning Land of the Golondrinas.
According to recent studies, this island was first inhabited by 3 different migratory waves. The first group arrived aprox arround the 11 b.c. by a tribe of carribean semi-nomads who were experts in hunting and fishing. Eventually they all perished or disappeared leaving very low amount of trails.
The second one appeared aprox around the 111 a.d. by a sedentary tribe of Mayan who belonged to the Peten región of Guatemala south from Yucatan. This group definately had a much higher cultural level superior to their predecessors. They were sedentary which meant that they had great understanding of agricultura and also dominated architectural techniques.
The 3rd group was settled at the final centuries of the classic period by another mayan settlement from the state of Tabasco who are the responsable of most of the architectural vestiges.
Many years later the island was accidentally discovered for the first time by outsiders Gonzalo Guerrero and Geronimo de Aguilar. These men were castaway after a strong attempt to dropout from the Spanish militia. After sailing for days from Cuba, they found this island were Gonzalo Guerrero finally married a Mayan princess and became commander in chief for the mayan army.
Years later Juan de Grijalba, one of Spain’s most famous conquerors founded the island and named it “La Santa cruz the la puerta latina” ; “The Saint Cross of the Latin Doorway”.
Ever since, the Island of Cozumel has populated and now considered a semi-massive turistic point and also the home of almost 90,000 people.
